What is Glutamine? 

Glutamine, often called L-glutamine, is one of the 20 amino acids encoded by the standard genetic code.  It is a conditionally essential amino acid, and is also the most common amino acid found in your muscles.  Since glutamine contains nitrogen as well, it is also the primary transporter of nitrogen into muscle cells.

What does Glutamine do?

Glutamine has been known to aid in protein synthesis and plays a key role in anti-catabolism as well as cell volumizing.  Glutamine prevents your muscles from being eaten up, or catabolized.  It also helps maintain cell volume while speeding up recovery.  In addition, glutamine is an important nutrient for your intestines.  Furthermore, glutamine may help boost your immune system.  Since glutamine levels are depleted during intense workouts, it’s important to supplement glutamine in your workout regimen.

How much Glutamine do I need?

The recommended dosage for bodybuilders is 10-15 grams of glutamine per day.  It should be taken 2-3 times daily with the best times being morning, post-workout and before bed.
